Cades Cove Traveler's
Tips:
Located
8 miles from Townsend, Tennessee, Cades Cove is a Smoky
Mountain wonderland that is one of the most popular vacation
destinations within the larger confines of Great Smoky
Mountains National Park. If you're looking for information
on Cades Cove, there is a park guidebook at the Cades
Cove orientation shelter- located near the beginning of
the Cades Cove loop road. If more detailed information
is required, the Cades Cove Visitor Center has all sorts
of useful information about the park; including recreational
highlights, camping regulations, and Great Smoky Mountains
National Park rules. The visitor center is located at
the Cable Mill area- several miles further along the Cades
Cove loop.
Cades Cove Recreational Highlights:
Visitors to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park find
that the valley of Cades Cove is like a microcosm of the
larger park. Cades Cove is a delight to explore since
it offers a wide variety of recreational for Smoky Mountain
visitors to enjoy. Some of the most popular Cades Cove
activities include: hiking, driving, camping, fishing,
horseback riding, biking, and picnicking. And these are
just a few of the recreational opportunities that Cades
Cove affords Tennessee tourists. To fully enjoy all that
Cades Cove has to offer, it's a good idea to come early
with a plan to spend the day.
Cades
Cove Guided Programs:
During the months of the summer, a diverse set of guided
programs are offered in and around Cades Cove. Many of
these programs run into the fall. Some of the most popular
programs include: hayrides around the Cades Cove loop,
multi-media presentations in the campground amphitheater
and walking tours through the area of Cable Mill. In addition,
curriculum-based presentations are offered to school groups
that visit Cades Cove and the Great Smoky Mountains National
Park during the fall and spring.
Cades Cove Loop Road:
To more fully experience the wide expanse of Cades Cove,
many Tennessee visitors choose to drive the winding, loop
road that carves through the park. This is an 11-mile
drive that offers spectacular Smoky Mountain vistas. Most
choose to meander slowly through the loop in order to
experience the stunning diversity of plant life on display
throughout the area. This is a good idea considering the
speed limit through the loop is 20mph.
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park has a greater
diversity of trees than any other park in the North America.
That abundance will be on clear display as you drive the
Cades Cove loop. The loop is generally open from dawn
until dusk. If you want to stop and enjoy the view on
foot, there are numerous pull-offs along the route that
allow you to get out and enjoy the view. When planning
for your Cades Cove loop drive, be sure to allow for plenty
of time to make it there and back. During high season,
the drive can take up to 3 full hours to complete.
